Understanding Accountable Care Organizations

In 2022, I worked with a Human-Centered Design team at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of Burden Reduction and Health Informatics (OBRHI) to understand the barriers to Medicare Accountable Care Organizations face as they move to meet CMS reporting requirements for aggregate electronic Clinical Quality Measures (eCQMs) and Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) CQMs. I led a team including design experts and policy analysts to interview multiple Accountable Care Organizations’ leadership, electronic medical record vendors and other key stakeholders to understand and then visually communicate their challenges.
